It was a great happiness and learning for me to be part of the Running the European Network of Biological and Physical retrospective Physical dosimetry (RENEB) general assembly meeting held during the European Radiation Protection Week (ERPW)-2022 at the Congress Centre of Estoril, Estoril, Portugal on 10 October, 2022.
RENEB is a network of European countries which works for mutual assistance in individual dose estimation in large scale radiological and nuclear emergencies. This means that in case of any large scale nuclear accident or emergencies ( e.g. Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in 2011 at Japan, nuclear accident of Chernobyl 1986 or any other kind of nuclear emergencies) all the researchers and scientists from these organizations will work immediately to support the ‘individual dose estimation’. Individual dose estimation in simple words is calculating how much radiation dose an exposed person might have received from this accident. This is an important piece of information that can give better health care to the exposed population and planning for rescue operation. Therefore, sooner it is available better it is. The researchers and scientists in lab use several biological methods and assays from the exposed person’s blood sample to estimate the individual dose. I am glad to be part of this aspect of radiation biology research known as radiation protection and bio-dosimetry. The RENEB network was founded within the 7th EU framework EURATOM Fission Program. Beginning 2016 a total of 26 organizations from 16 European countries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for mutual assistance in individual dose estimation in large scale radiological and nuclear emergencies. In 2017 the RENEB association was founded with the capability to act as a legal partner for organizations and platforms, active in emergency preparedness, radiation protection and research.
The RENEB network provides rapid, comprehensive and standardized methodology for individualized dose estimation in case of large- scale radiological events in Europe and beyond. It is my immense pleasure to be part of this meeting to learn and discuss with the eminent scientists and several enthusiastic researchers in the field of radiation protection and bio-dosimetry.
