Why I am responsible for the flood in my town?

It is not always the administration, technology or money power that can bring progress in the society, development in the country. I think the first thing that is required is the mindset, attitude and action of each individual.

Hey!🤩

Welcome back again, to my blog. I write my thoughts and share it with you for your suggestions, comments and feedback. So, please do not forget to give one below. Today, due to monsoon rainfall there are floods in several towns in India and I wanted to share my thoughts on it that why I think it is my fault? 🤔

After a terrible and deadly hot summer in India the much awaited monsoon is here. However, instead of cherishing this every drop of rain with some crunchy Pakora (vegetables such as potatoes and onions, coated in seasoned gram flour batter and deep fried.) and a cup of warm Chai (tea), we are more often finding several complains and problem surrounding us.

Out of many the most common one is flooding in several villages and towns in India. To some extend, if I can imagine, the flood situation in remote village or a town near a river is understandable. Because being a developing country the village planning, drainage system and preparedness to natural disasters are poor in these places. However, the flood situations in big cities (like Delhi, Mumbai…etc) is a real concern. Well, it is perfectly fine and we have rights as a citizen to complain the administration for not able to manage this well. But, I think, no administration will do well unless and until the citizens do their work with responsibility. I think we the citizen are equally responsible for this. Let’s take an example, We often complain that there is flood in the town because of blockage of drainage system during rain. I am agree with you that this is responsibility of the administration to maintain the drainage system. But before that, I (may be we!) as a citizen rarely taken care in properly disposing the waste. We all know this very well, how carelessly we throw here and there wrappers of various products even how we through house hold wastes. This at certain point blocks the drainage system. But, when we will change is the big question. I believe from the day we become serious in proper disposal of wastes this problem will be solved to a greater extend.

At the end, this is not the only cause and this doesn’t mean only aware citizen will able to stop flooding during monsoon in India. However, this is equally true that even a well established management by any administration will not give a long term solution if there is no support and contribution from the citizens.

I strongly feels, holding a smart phone, living in a smart city, does not sounds good if the people living in there are not smart enough! So, what I am telling to myself is to keep doing little more effort to be that ‘responsible and ‘smart citizen’ enough. I hope you will agree with this for yourself too. Because,  individual actions alone may not solve the entire problem and there are more people those need to understand seriousness this situation. So, if possible please, share this to your friends.

Thank you very much for reading. If you have some time, please write your comment and/or suggestion below.

Cheers, enjoy the raining! ⛈️☔🌧️🌦️🌈

An evening with Dr. G. Vishwanathan the founder and chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology at Stockholm, Sweden

Let me take you back to the year 2009, after getting my bachelor degree from MITS Rayagada (under Berhampur University, Odisha) I was selected for M.Sc. biotechnology program at VIT University, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. I would say, it was the paradigms shift in my career and unforgettable two years of my academic life. Before, telling you more about this, I really wish to appreciate you for your time to visit my blog and read this.

OK! It all started during the last few months of my bachelor degree final examinations. It was my really close friend from south India who insisted me to apply for master degree program in VIT University. Candidly speaking, I was not at all aware of this university (Perhaps, because I had never ever thought to go southern part of India for education, I was more inclined to continue higher study in own state Odisha or maximum to go any good university in the Northern India). I admire his effort in convincing me and I really appreciate his suggestion. He had told me, it is a nice university and if we get a seat it will be really nice to study there. So making long story short, I applied together with him. We both were invited for counselling (choosing course based on the merit rank). I got M.Sc. Biotechnology course as the last candidate (Sl. 180) for the course. Even though, I got admission in the course I liked, it was sad for me to know that he could not get admission in M.Sc. Biotechnology at VIT. Even, he did not choose other similar M.Sc. course (Microbiology/Biochemistry/Genetics). So it was really difficult thing for me to digest and had no idea how to respond to the happening. I had almost zero idea of life style, language and most of the things of the southern India. Mostly because I was from a small village and not many from family were highly educated. Precisely speaking, I was really scared of south India! However, as someone once told “Life is not a dress rehearsal. The curtain is up and you are on, so you might as well play your part to the best of your ability. And you don’t get to choose your part, either. Sometimes you’re the lead, and sometimes you’re a spear-carrier. But you have to keep moving, because that’s the only way to make it all the way to the final curtain call.” I thought to keep going. Only good thing that happened was that my friend got admission in his desired M.Sc. Biotechnology program in another University in Bangalore which was very close to VIT University.

Oh, sorry! I am telling you the whole story in quite length, I must not make you bored! So, the point is, it was such a memorable event of my life that I got admission in VIT University. And the story did not end there, the two years in VIT for me was really full of challenges for me. Starting from facing the financial crisis for admission and to pay initial university fees, running from bank to bank and begging for an education loan, writing letters, sending fax to VIT administration with request to extend some days for payment of my admission fees. Huhhh… those days were really tough and are really close to my heart. It taught me lot of things that I can’t express here. Anyway, at the end it was State Bank of India (SBI) that approved my education loan and I continued my education at VIT University. Like this there are hundreds of struggles, that I faced as a student from weak financial background family and rural village. I may tell you details in some other occasion.

Regardless of that, the relevance of all this to tell you is that, time goes and you never know when and how it tries to heal your struggles and makes you nostalgic again. It was the day then (full of struggles) and now meeting the founder and chancellor of this premier University in a foreign country. I never thought… at least not in 2011 that something like this may happen in future. Indeed, it was my great pleasure to meet Dr. G. Vishwanathan sir and just like a cherry on the top of cake, I also met our M.Sc. days teacher Dr. R. Seenivasan sir at Stockholm, Sweden. The occasion was VIT Alumni Association’s Sweden chapter-2023 at Stockholm. I must say, you may have many different opinions and thoughts on people who are working in top of administrative position. But, I have now noticed, one characteristics is common, most of them are so kind and humble human being. They have a very strong and fundamental desire to do something better for the society. And Dr. G. Viswanathan sir is not an exception, his words and visions are so good to inherit. I will not tell much but I must quote one of his sentence “Not only, VIT. I wants all the educational institutions in India to prosper and provide best education for building a better Indian society!” I think, this speaks the greatness of this personality and the reason behind the growth of VIT University.

Okey! This topic is again going long, and you must be saying “Prabodha, can you please conclude!”

Sure, my apologies! 😛 . I must thank our teacher Dr. R. Seenivasan sir for his extraordinary memory to airily recall my face from 2009-11 and all his humorous comments during the entire evening of conversations. Just like home reaching you and it was full of emotion and love. I must thank the VITAA (VIT alumni association) for organizing this chapter and not allowing us to forget everything that had happened to us during our study period at VIT University. Just like as VITAA says, and it is truly “Once a VITian, always a VITian”. I share few pictures from this memorable event below.

Thank you very much for reading. Please leave your comments below and keep visiting my blog.

Keep smiling 🙂

Cheers!

A museum for banned books? Well… Yes!

I was extremely excited to visit this museum and will share you in brief here about my experience. But, before I start…

Namaste! I hope, you are doing well and I am so glad you are here to read my thoughts on this banned books museum, I visited in Tallin, Estonia.

This is even more exciting to know every year April 23 is celebrated as “World book day”. And, the theme for World Book Day 2023 is “Indigenous Languages.” The theme is focused on the native languages of a country.

Anyway, coming to the topic, it was a beautiful chilly day at Tallin, even though sun was shining it was not enough to increase the temperature. I along with my friends (Nadia, Mostafa, and Pamela) from my laboratory were exploring this beautiful city. Suddenly, Pamela spotted this name board “Banned books museum, come in it’s FREE!”. It brought me with several questions such as…how can there be a museum for banned books? I had heard about some books that were banned, but never about a museum! So without any second thought I went inside. It was indeed an excellent choice to visit inside. I found collections of lot of books from different countries that were banned or are currently banned 🚫 due to several reasons.

Out of my curiosity, I asked the person seating at the reception desk, how difficult it was to maintain this collection? He just said “Not an easy task, but it is my desire to keep those thoughts of authors alive and united!”. I was surprised with his answer, I asked him you are an employee here but you are so dedicated!! With carrying a smile on his face, he said, “Well, I am the owner/director of this museum”. Then, I asked him, if I can ask some of my other burning questions. He welcomed my question with “Sure! Why not.” I asked… What was the motivation that he even thought to make a museum like this? How he collects this banned books? Whether he faced threats from people or government? How he gets funds to maintain this museum? And manymore… He was kind enough to answer all my questions. Here, to make the long story short, I understood “It is his strong determination and hard work that has brought this museum to a reality at Tallin”. I appreciate his effort and felt like something different. I don’t have any personal comment on banned books in general. But, it was a nice experience to talk to this guy and a nice memory to remember for me.

So, don’t miss to visit his museum if you are there. Interesting to me, I didn’t know one of the famous book on science “Origin of Species” by Charles Darwin was also banned at some point of time! If you know the reason, please share in comment below . Below, I share a selfie with the owner/ director of this extra ordinary museum Mr. Joseph Dunnigan.

Thank you very much for reading. Ernest Hemingway once said, “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” But, what if, we are not allowed to read some books? Will I miss a loyal friend of my likings? I conclude here, but the question is open…

Why Ghost or other form of life may exist!

Someone asked me, “Have you seen a Ghost? I said “No”(perhaps, I have not seen yet!). Then, the person asked “Do you believe in Ghosts?” Well, I had no definite answer for this question. So, I said “I am not sure to say NO! May be they exists and I haven’t seen one”. The person started arguing with “if you have not seen one yet then you should say they don’t exists.”

Now, the conversation become interesting.

Photo by Ryan Miguel Capili on Pexels.com

I said lightly, “See, I have not seen many things, but they do exists! So, I can not say NO for the things that I have not seen!

The person said, “This is true but you don’t need to see Taj Mahal or Pyramid or Statue of Liberty to believe in their existence! Those are seen and known to be present by billions of people. These comes under General Knowledge. But, Ghosts are different, they don’t exists! And science says you shouldn’t believe in something that you haven’t seen yet!”

I said, “Well, Ghosts or other life forms are not a physical entity to compare the logic with your given example. Anyway, then can you prove they don’t exists?” I said again “Till, I don’t get a conclusive/convincible answer I can’t say surely say they don’t exists! “

The person asked me, “Why you are so adamant on this? You are a researcher, you work for Science! You should not say something like this unscientific!”

By now this topic was turned more interesting! I felt, this guy need a plausible logic. Why I can’t deny the existence of so called Ghosts or other form of life? Am I non-scientific? Even if I have never seen them, have I ever felt their existence? If you are also wondering with these questions… below is my crazy thoughts on it.

I said to him, “Let me take you back to early 16th (year 1500 to 1550 or something like that) Century.” I said “Imagine you and me are sitting and chatting while drinking tea/coffee in a room. A friend of us comes near us and tells us, “Do you know there are many life forms that are surrounding you two!” What would be our reactions then? I again said “We will laugh at him right? Because we could not see anything any living things surrounding us at that time.” The person responded “Yes!”.

I said “Well, that is NOT right at all! we know that even if we could not see any life form at that time, now we understand that, there are millions of microorganism exists, surrounding us! Thanks to the invention of initial microscope concept by Zacharias Janssen (1585), subsequent light microscope concept and protozoa discovery by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1674) and so on till date. We could see and study these life forms. Now we know much of about them. So, I am agree that I have not seen a Ghost or such life form yet. But that does not mean that they do not exists at all! May be one day Science will come up with some tool (may be different than microscope or upgraded from of Microscope or any other specialized equipment) and then we could see them or understand more about them. Who knows? Science may achieve this soon! So, not seeing something dose not necessarily mean they do not exists! Well, I am agree that I have not seen a ghost or another form of life. And as a science followers, I do not promote any disbelieve or baseless stories. May be science will disclose this aspect and allow me to say strongly, No! Ghosts do not exists! Science has immense potential may be it need to explore this topic with a different approach! I do not know.. “

The person said, “I am done with you Prabodha”. I am going to invent some scientific tools…

I said, “Dear friend, but, Please do not afraid to Ghosts (if they exists), there must be many good ones as well, like good microorganism! 😁🤩

Thank you very much for reading! 🙏❤️✨

Prabodha in RENEB general assembly meeting at Estoril, Portugal

It was a great happiness and learning for me to be part of the Running the European Network of Biological and Physical retrospective Physical dosimetry (RENEB) general assembly meeting held during the European Radiation Protection Week (ERPW)-2022 at the Congress Centre of Estoril, Estoril, Portugal on 10 October, 2022.

RENEB is a network of European countries which works for mutual assistance in individual dose estimation in large scale radiological and nuclear emergencies. This means that in case of any large scale nuclear accident or emergencies ( e.g. Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in 2011 at Japan, nuclear accident of Chernobyl 1986 or any other kind of nuclear emergencies) all the researchers and scientists from these organizations will work immediately to support the ‘individual dose estimation’. Individual dose estimation in simple words is calculating how much radiation dose an exposed person might have received from this accident. This is an important piece of information that can give better health care to the exposed population and planning for rescue operation. Therefore, sooner it is available better it is. The researchers and scientists in lab use several biological methods and assays from the exposed person’s blood sample to estimate the individual dose. I am glad to be part of this aspect of radiation biology research known as radiation protection and bio-dosimetry. The RENEB network was founded within the 7th EU framework EURATOM Fission Program. Beginning 2016 a total of 26 organizations from 16 European countries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for mutual assistance in individual dose estimation in large scale radiological and nuclear emergencies. In 2017 the RENEB association was founded with the capability to act as a legal partner for organizations and platforms, active in emergency preparedness, radiation protection and research.

The RENEB network provides rapid, comprehensive and standardized methodology for individualized dose estimation in case of large- scale radiological events in Europe and beyond. It is my immense pleasure to be part of this meeting to learn and discuss with the eminent scientists and several enthusiastic researchers in the field of radiation protection and bio-dosimetry. I am sharing a group photograph below that was taken after the GA meeting.
